Frequently Asked Questions

Q:

How does Self-Cinching work?

A:

Pressing the bearing into a ready prepared mounting hole, whereby the panel material Cold-Flows into the groove below the serrations, retaining the bearing securely in place.

Q:

Are there any special requirements for the panel hole?

A:

Yes. The diameter must be to the specified tolerance. The edge of the hole must be kept sharp; do not chamfer. Ensure the mounting hole minimum dimension centerline to edge complies with the figure in the bearing specification.

Q:

How securely does Self-Clinching retain the bearing?

A:

The installation is permanent, impervious to shock, vibration, or side-load. The smallest of bearings require a minimum of 1,000 lbs to be pushed out.

Q:

Does the installation/Self-Clinch process affect the bearing ID?

A:

No. The load is taken by the retainer, thereby ensuring the bearing ID is unaffected.

Q:

Do I need special equipment to install Self-Clinching bearings?

A:

No. Self-Clinching bearings are installed using any type of parallel press which will squeeze the bearing into place.

Q:

Can I install a Self-Clinching bearing with a hammer blow or similar force?

A:

No. Self-Clinching bearings must be installed with a squeezing action. A quick impact installation will not allow sufficient time for the panel material to Cold-Flow.

Q:

What are the panel material requirements?

A:

The material must be metallic and meet the minimum panel thickness requirement in the bearing specification. The material must be sufficiently ductile and softer than the bearing retainer, steel 65HRB, and stainless steel 80HRB. A wide cross section of materials are suitable for clinching, including: Cold-Rolled Steel, Aluminum, Stainless Steel.

Q:

Is there a maximum thickness of material beyond which we cannot Self-Clinch?

A:

No. It is possible to Self-Clinch into any thickness above the minimum.

Q:

How familiar will my sheet metal shop be with Self-Clinching?

A:

Self-Clinching is a widely used mounting technology particularly for mounting fasteners, originated by Penn Engineering & Manufacturing (PEM).

Q:

Can I use the Self-Aligning facility on an application that oscillates the aligning insert?

A:

No. The Self-Align feature is for static misalignment up to ± 5°.

Q:

Do you have a bronze bearing that can operate at higher temperatures?

A:

Yes. There are high temperature oils available as well as the Teflon Bronze option.

Q:

What is the difference between Delrin and Delrin-AF?

A:

Delrin is a highly effective bearing medium; the AF option is Teflon Impregnated Delrin, taking the PV value from 3,000 to 9,000.

Q:

I have an application with relatively high load and speed where the shaft is only rotating 20 - 30°, what do you recommend?

A:

Teflon Bronze.

Q:

Who’s Needle Roller Bearings do you use?

A:

INA.

Q:

I have an application requiring linear motion. What should I use?

A:

Depending on the operating requirements and the length of stroke, Delrin or Teflon Bronze.

Q:

I have a need for a Self-Aligning bearing mounted in a housing. Do you offer these?

A:

Yes. Spyraflo has a full range of Aluminum Pillow-Blocks and steel flanges incorporating the full line of Self-Align bearings.

Q:

Why do you offer aluminum Pillow Blocks and not steel or cast iron?

A:

Much lighter, cleaner lines and non-corrosive. Although, steel Pillow Blocks are available on special order.

Q: Do Spyraflo bearings comply to the EU RoHS & WEE directives?
A: Yes. The product line complies. A certificate is available on request from Customer Service.

Q:

Are you ISO 9000 registered?

A:

Yes. ISO 9001-2000.

Q:

I need a small quantity of samples for evaluation. How do I obtain them?

A:

Contact Spyraflo Customer Service at sales@spyraflo.com and FOC samples will be sent.

Q:

I have a special requirement. Can you help?

A:

Yes. Many Spyraflo sales are derivatives of the standard product line.
