A Lightweight Bearing Alternative

A series of self-aligning, lightweight and corrosion resistant bearings have been developed as an alternative for the more expensive cast iron mounted ball bearings that may be considered 'overkill' in many applications.

Press Article in The Engineer | March 2007 | Micromech | UK

The bearings provide a number of benefits, including non-corrosive housings, and ±5° static self-alignment capability, which solves many problems associated with bearing misalignment.

The pillow block and housing flange line comes with various bearing options, including SAE840 bronze, Teflon-Bronze and needle roller bearings. A significant benefit of the SAE840 bronze version is its ability to maintain high integrity of the oil lubricant during manufacture, thereby significantly enhancing bearing performance.

These bearings series are available in sizes from 6mm to 30mm diameters and because the housings are manufactured in sintered aluminum they ensure a high degree of consistent dimensional accuracy.

Clinch is a Clinch

Press Article in The Engineer | March 2007 | Micromech | UK

Spyraflo self-clinching bearings utilise a technique whereby components can be securely mounted in sheet metal panels, often as thin as 1mm. The process does not require a precision diameter hole or expensive second operation machining or assembly.

Spyraflo bearings are held in an outer retainer, the element that facilitates the clinching process. The retainer body is tapered, allowing it to automatically center when dropped into the hole. Whle supporting the underside, a steady load is applied to the flange face. The interference between the retainer and hole causes the panel material to flow into the undercut below the flange. Continued pressure is then applied as the serrated edge of the flange meets the steel panel surface. The serrations act as multiple cutting edges that increase the flow of material into the undercut.

Features:

  • Spyraflo self-clinch range incorporates Needle Roller, Teflon Bronze, SAE 840 Bronze and Delrin bearings
  • Self-clinching installation ensures rigidity, minimum occupation of the panel surface and thinner panel use
  • Mounting is impervious to shock or vibration
  • Mounting is equally successful on thin sheet steel panels or thick substantial frames and housings
  • Technique can be effectively used on a wide variety of material
