Spyraflo Bearings Have Quilting Machine Covered

Handi Quilter

Problem

Handi Quilter’s dedicated engineering team encountered quite a few technical challenges when designing their large capacity HQ24 Fusion machine. The long-arm quilting machine applies an intermittent but significant radial load as the needle pierces the quilt material up to 2,200 times a minute. Also, the motor drive transfers motion to the oscillating needle and foot mechanism more than 2 feet away. Handi Quilter insisted on a minimum bearing life of 5 million stitches, with no maintenance, excessive vibration or noise. Aesthetics mattered, too, since the company wanted to maintain its sleek, streamlined design.

Solution

Spyraflo’s extensive custom bearing expertise played a big role in the success of this popular machine’s design. A self-aligning SAE-840 bronze bearing met Handi Quilter’s extreme performance requirements. We simply customized our press-fit design by extending the outer parallel diameter and adding a second locating flange. The resulting profile allowed 10mm- and 12mm-diameter bearings to be dropped into the body of the machine, positioned in a semi-circular nest. The bearings were located axially by the two flanges and clamped in place by a mating semi-circular strap. The self-aligning capability facilitated easy machine assembly and resulted in smooth shaft start-up with minimum friction.
